2023 China-US Language and Intercultural Communication Camp (Winter Camp) opened

WIST,September 16-- The opening ceremony for the 2023 China-US Language and Intercultural Communication Camp (Winter Camp) was held online. Chen Bin, dean of the School of Ship and Ocean Engineering (SSOE), Wu Chunfang, deputy dean of SSOE, Nie Jide, deputy director of the School of International Cultural Exchanges, and student representatives attended. Phil Burdick, vice president of US Pima Community College (PCC), Yan Xu, deputy director of the Center for International Education, and Kacey Evilsizor, a winter camp instructor, also attended.

At the opening ceremony, Chen emphasized the importance of language and culture in his speech, encouraging students to embrace diversity, respect differences, and embark on a journey of cross-cultural exploration. Burdick fully agreed, reviewing the profound friendship between the two colleges over the past five years. He hoped that the students in the winter camp will participate wholeheartedly in all camp activities with an open mind and a positive attitude to improve their English language and cross-cultural communication skills. Student representative Xu Lu from Class 22352 shared her expectations and goals for the camp.

Subsequently, the first session of the winter camp officially commenced. Kacey organized ice-breaking activities for the students, thus opening the gateway for them to delve into the camp’s learning experience. During the activity, the students actively participated and communicated with each other, fostering mutual understanding and friendship.

The camp will last for eight weeks and will also include various cultural experiences, group discussions, and thematic presentations. These activities will provide students with a comprehensive, interesting, and interactive learning platform to help them improve their English proficiency and develop their cross-cultural communication skills.

This winter camp is the tenth overseas exchange program for outstanding students of WIST, as well as the third study camp jointly organized by WIST, PCC, and Wuhan Railway Vocational College of Technology.
